Does your coffee bag say 80+? That means tasters have given the coffee at least 80 out of 100 points. From that score onward, we call it specialty.
Who gives the score?
The score is given by certified tasters, known as Q graders. They taste the coffee according to a set protocol from the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). Each coffee receives a score from 0 to 100.
From 80 points, it's specialty
The threshold for specialty is 80 points. Above that, there are three levels:
| Score | Level |
|---|---|
| 80 to 84.99 | Very good |
| 85 to 89.99 | Excellent |
| 90 to 100 | Exceptional |
What do tasters assess?
Tasters award points in ten categories: fragrance, flavor, aftertaste, acidity, body, balance, uniformity, clean cup, sweetness, and overall impression. The points are added together to form the score.
What doesn't the score tell you?
A high score says something about the coffee's quality. It doesn't tell you whether you'll enjoy it. One drinker may like a fruity, light coffee, while another prefers chocolate and nuts. That's why our coffees also come with tasting notes and a roast level.
How to use the score when choosing
- Check whether the coffee scores 80+: that makes it specialty.
- Read the tasting notes, such as fruit, chocolate, or flowers.
- Choose a roast level that suits you.
- Check the origin and roast date on the bag.
