What is specialty coffee?

Specialty coffee is coffee of the highest quality, judged by taste, origin, processing and roasting. To be officially recognized as a 'specialty', the coffee must score at least 80 out of 100 points on the quality standard of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA).

This means: no defective beans, optimum ripeness at harvest, careful processing and a roast that brings out the unique flavour notes of the bean. You can taste the difference in the cup: more complex, clearer, with notes of red fruit, citrus, chocolate or flowers.

Why Colombian Coffee is So Special

Colombia has been one of the absolute top coffee producing countries for decades. With more than 500,000 small coffee farmers spread across mountainous regions, the country offers an unprecedented diversity of flavors, microclimates and terroirs. Colombia is located on the so-called coffee belt and has everything needed to grow high-quality Arabica beans: high altitude (often above 1,500 meters), fertile volcanic soil and precipitation that is almost perfectly distributed over the year.

Huila coffee: known for its lively acidity, floral aromas and notes of citrus, red berry or caramel.


Nariño coffee: often complex and elegant, with tropical fruit, honey and floral notes.


Antioquia Coffee: A bit more classic in style – chocolate, nuts and a creamy body.

What is the difference between Colombian coffee and coffee from other countries?

Colombian coffee is known for its clean taste, balanced body and pronounced aromas. This is due to the high altitude, the Arabica varieties and the wet processing method that is often used. Unlike some African coffees (which can be more floral or pronounced), Colombian coffee is often accessible and complex at the same time.

Is Colombian coffee good for espresso?

Absolutely. Many of our Colombian coffees have a natural sweetness and round body, making them excellent for espresso. We label each product as being suitable for filter, espresso or both.
